Tam McTavish is a Teacher Candidate currently attending University of Northern British Columbia. He begun his career in the Outdoor Industry, but sharing knowledge, and connecting people to resources have always been his biggest passions in everything he does. He has worked for ACMG guiding companies in the Rockies, plenty of Outdoor retail, including purchasing roles at MEC, and for Arc’teryx. He has volunteered and helped teach courses for the Alpine Club of Canada and the BC Mountaineering Club. When introduced to the Take A Hike At Risk Youth Program, Tam hoped to bring his outdoor skills to bear, only to have a scheduling conflict put him in the classroom with secondary students. To his surprise he felt comfortable, and elated to be in this environment helping students thrive and reach their potential. The passion for sharing knowledge was clearly best realized here, and so begun a career shift. Now he has over 200 hours in the classroom, and a passion for working with students who have been left behind, or made to feel less than in the regular school system.
